MSC Siasconset
The station at Siasconset, MA is considered to be the first permanent Marconi wireless coast station in the US. As a Marconi station it used the call sign MSC.
The station gained fame on 23 January 1909 when MSC operator Jack Irwin copied the CQD sent by White Star liner SS REPUBLIC after it was in a collision with SS FLORIDA in dense fog. Jack Binns, later assigned as Radio Officer aboard RMS TITANIC/MGY, was the operator aboard SS REPUBLIC.
When RMS TITANIC struck an iceberg and sank on 14 April 1912 MSC operator Matt Tierney was the first coast station to receive the CQD/SOS signals from the ship.
But MSC is also famous for being the station at which a young David Sarnoff stood one of his first radio watches. Sarnoff was trained by MSC operator Jack Irwin to replace him when he was away on sea duty.
